Riverside Holiday Family Fun Guide for 2025
Looking for fun things to do during the holiday season in Riverside, California, with your children?
About Riverside Fun Kids and this Holiday Guide
I’m Kelly, a homeschool mom of four, and I live in the Riverside, California, area. I have two Instagram accounts where I love sharing ideas for adventures for families:
SoCal Nature Kids focuses on hikes, parks, gardens, camping, and nature areas throughout Southern California.
Riverside Fun Kids focuses on activities to do specifically in the city of Riverside and the surrounding area.
If you live in or near Riverside, this list is for you! I loved personally rounding up this list of festive ideas and I hope you can find lots of ideas below for Christmas and holiday fun - from holiday lights, festive events, church programs, where to meet Santa, and more!
This holiday guide is primarily focused on the city of Riverside, but I’ve also included some ideas for neighboring areas like Corona, Moreno Valley, Jurupa Valley, and beyond!
I’ve tried my best to link to more info about events based on where I got the info from. I always encourage you to call ahead, check the location’s social media account, etc. to make sure the event is still happening. Be aware that some events require advance tickets or registration (even free ones!) so be sure you look at that in advance.
I’ll be updating this list throughout the holiday season! Do you have other ideas or corrections for this list? Please get in touch here and let me know.
Where to See Christmas Lights in Riverside, California
The Mission Inn Festival of Lights in Downtown Riverside - the most famous and popular place to go! We aren’t a family that loves crowds, so we like going on a weekday and arriving before sunset, when it’s more chill than busy weekends. We usually bring our own cocoa and just walk around and enjoy the lights for an hour so… there are usually vendors too if you’re looking to shop or buy treats, and some nights you can meet Santa (see below). I’m working on a family guide to the Mission Inn Festival of Lights that will be coming soon!
The storybook displays at Chapman Place - This street sets up cute storybook themed holiday light displays - you may see some of your favorite characters! Sometimes people refer to this area as “Storybook Lane.” Located on Chapman Place between Brockton and Magnolia in the Wood Streets neighborhood (near Riverside City College.) It’s not a long distance, and you’ll want to park and then walk the street to get all the details. Plan to spend 15-30 minutes there, strolling down one side of the street and then back up the other to your car.
The A and S Christmas House is located at 134 Gracefield Way, Riverside, CA, near the Mission Grove area (where Sprouts is). They are going to be featured on a national TV show this year called The Great Christmas Light Fight! We have never been here before but I’m definitely planning to check it out this year, and then watch the episode! (I believe it will air December 4, 2025, at 10pm on ABC, according to their Facebook page).
Lights on Clearwood - While you’re in the area, stop by The Lights on Clearwood (118 Clearwood Ave, Riverside CA). The info on their Facebook is a little outdated but hoping they’re still doing their show!
Mission Grove Lights - Even better, follow this post for a route through Mission Grove (Riverside neighborhood) of lights to view!
Victoria Woods Lights - There are also some festive houses on Glenhaven Avenue, just up the hill from Poly High School. Aim for the intersection of Glenhaven and Fairview Ave.
Outside of Riverside, there are more options:
Candy Cane Lane in Corona - this is a long-standing Christmasy neighborhood, but I have heard that it’s changed/gotten smaller in recent years. The cross streets are Main and Ontario, and the actual decorated streets are Pueblo and West Mission Road. Nearby is Gingerbread Lane in Corona - you can check their Facebook for more info as well.
Evergreen Loop - Another option in Corona is Evergreen Loop (that is the name of the street to type into your GPS app).
The Thoroughbred Christmas lights in Rancho Cucamonga. They go ALL OUT! This is extremely popular, and you should expect crowds and massive wait lines and traffic. I’ve seen reports of 2-4 hour wait times to enter!! The recommended strategy to shorten your wait is arriving on a weekday by 5pm. There are also specific rules for days you can walk and days you need to drive through. There is lots of info on their Instagram here.
San Jacinto - There is a home in San Jacinto (near Hemet) that is pretty impressive! The address is 1935 Meridian St in San Jacinto.
I found a web site that lists Christmas light displays around the country - you might look to see if there are any others listed near you.

Near Riverside:
Oak Glen Preserve is open year-round, but it’s particularly lovely when the air is crisp and the leaves are changing color. (Be aware they close if there’s snow/ice on the trails). Oak Glen is a little community in the mountains, about 45 minutes from Riverside - it is not as high elevation as Big Bear or Arrowhead, so the road is not nearly as windy and doesn’t have drop-offs. Oak Glen Preserve is a free nature area, with free parking, right next to Los Rios Rancho Apple Farm. Pack a picnic lunch (we like the picnic tables in the “Children’s Forest” area at Oak Glen Preserve and the day will be free… or stop by Snowline Orchard for their famous apple cider donuts.

Christmas Tree Farms in or near Riverside
I will be honest, we are fake tree people. I’m a little allergic, and I love being able to put up our tree in November! But it’s still fun to stroll a Christmas tree farm, take some pictures, and enjoy the festivity.
Greenspot Farms in Mentone is my favorite place to take kids for a Christmas tree farm. It’s free (no admission or parking fee) and pretty low-key. It’s about 30 minutes from Riverside (between Redlands and Forest Falls) and I love the free, festive atmosphere - you can see more about our visit a few years ago here. You can buy a pre-cut tree or even cut one down yourself! “As always, there is NO ADMISSION FEE, NO PARKING FEE, to come and enjoy Greenspot Farms Christmas festivities and to see Santa Visits in his sleigh for a picture perfect moment!” They also have an evening event with a hayride through lights, with movies, a fire pit, and more.
Live Oak Canyon in Redlands has free admission, free parking, with paid activities including ice skating, meeting Santa, rides, petting zoo, and more. “Experience Holiday Magic at Live Oak Canyon’s Winter Wonderland & Christmas Tree Farm! Open Nov 28 – Dec 31 (closed Dec 24-25).” I’m not too familiar with their Christmas events, but I know sometimes their pumpkin patch is PACKED with traffic spilling out to the freeway.
Sand Haven Pines is in Perris near Lake Matthews. I’ve never heard of them before, but it looks fun and festive, with free admission and parking.
Holiday Shows and Concerts for Kids in Riverside, CA
From the Nutcracker to Frozen to Christmas concerts to several productions of A Christmas Carol, there are lots of shows to enjoy this holiday season!
There are two main options for seeing the Nutcracker in Riverside:
The Nutcracker at the Fox Theatre in Downtown Riverside by Inland Pacific Ballet on December 20-21. I expect this will be a beautiful performance! (at a premium price). “Experience the magic of the holidays with family and friends at southern California’s most spectacular production of The Nutcracker from critically acclaimed Inland Pacific Ballet. This annual production tells the story of a young girl named Clara who receives a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas Eve and sets out on a wondrous journey to the Land of the Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets.”
The Nutcracker comes to life in this magnificent ballet with beautiful sets, dazzling costumes, Tchaikovsky’s classic score, and more than 80 dancers on stage. Toy soldiers, life-sized dancing dolls, falling snow, a fantastic dream with battling mice, dancing snowflakes, waltzing flowers, gingerbread characters, and the delightful Sugar Plum Fairy stir the imagination. This is family entertainment at its best!
Another option is David Allen’s The Nutcracker presented at The Landis Performing Arts Center (also in downtown Riverside) by BRAVA Arts. Tickets for this show are a little cheaper, and feature a ballet school from Riverside itself. Saturday, December 13th and Sunday, December 14th. “From world renowned Choreographer, David Allan, performed on the area’s largest stage comes The Nutcracker. Showcasing the most spectacular choreography, from snowflakes to cannon fire, dazzling sets and gorgeous costumes, with a cast of over 110 talented and internationally known ballet dancers.”
Tweedlie Center for the Arts (TCA) is doing Frozen Jr. on November 13, 14, and 15 at the Box Theatre in Downtown Riverside (above the Riverside Food Lab).
Immanuel Lutheran Church’s Service of Lessons and Carols will feature choir and a live orchestra on Sunday, December 14 at 4pm. Free. It will be wonderful and inspirational for elementary age children who appreciate music! A nursery will be available for little ones under 5, or they’re welcome to attend.
A CBU Christmas is a beautiful choral/orchestra concert - Several years ago we gifted our daughters each a special “date” there with a parent (they were probably 5 and 7 years old?) and I still remember it fondly. Saturday, December 6
& Sunday, December 7, 2:30 PM & 7:00 PM. “Join CBU's Collinsworth School of Performing Arts for the 8th annual A CBU Christmas. Over 500 talented students and faculty will perform in one of the largest musical productions on the west coast. This year's performance brings together CBU music and theatre students, presenting the Christmas story like never before. Enjoy the timeless message of the Christmas season.”The Grove Church has a children’s production called “Carol of the Toys” on November 20 and 21: “A joyful Christmas musical filled with imagination, laughter, and the true meaning of Christmas! It reminds us all that Christmas isn’t complete without Jesus, and that the greatest joy comes from seeking Him. Both shows begin at 6:30 PM in the Worship Center (doors open at 6 PM). No cost.
Lifehouse Theatre in Redlands has a variety of Christmas-themed shows going on, including “A Christmas Song in My Heart” which “presents the extraordinary true stories behind some of the greatest Christmas carols of all time. Discover the events that led to the writing of such classic songs as “Silent Night” and more! Delight in the true joy of the Season with a Christmas song in your heart!” December 14 & 21, 2025. They are also doing a Bethlehem Marketplace from Dec. 10–20, 2025 at a nearby Redlands church for $20 per adult, $10 per teen, with kids 12 and under free. It seems like an immersive experience that could be pretty cool! Finally, they are doing Scrooge! based on a Christmas carol: “Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol” comes to life in this powerful family production enjoyed by thousands throughout Southern California. Music, comedy, and the powerful redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge combine with the sights and sounds of the season for an unforgettable presentation of the true Christmas Spirit.” November 22 – December 28, 2025. I’ve never been to a show at Lifehouse Theatre but have heard good things from others - be aware they are a Christian faith-based theatre and shows will likely be quite religious.
Scrooge! The Musical at CAT Corona Youth Theatre November 7 - 16 “Celebrate the magic of the holiday season with Scrooge! The Musical, a heartwarming stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. Written by renowned composer and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, this beloved musical brings the timeless story of Ebenezer Scrooge to life with memorable songs, dazzling production numbers, and a powerful message of love and redemption. With its unforgettable characters, uplifting score, and heartwarming spirit, Scrooge! The Musical is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays and share the joy of Dickens’ classic tale.”
Woodcrest Christian High School is performing It’s a Wonderful Life on November 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, 15, 2025. I’ve heard this is a great show, but pretty long - probably best for older kids who enjoy theatre. “Step into the timeless story of It’s a Wonderful Life, the beloved classic based on the movie by Frank Capra. This heartwarming fall play brings to life the unforgettable characters of George Bailey, Clarence the angel, and the people of Bedford Falls. With nostalgic moments like the ringing of a bell and George’s famous realization that “no man is a failure who has friends,” this production is sure to stir memories and inspire new ones. Don’t miss the chance to share this family tradition—get your tickets today and experience the magic together!”
Paid Light Shows, Festivals, and Other Christmas Events in Riverside, California
Metrolink Holiday Express Train - December 20 - one day only from Riverside. Holiday Express tickets are $30 per rider and must be booked in advance. “All aboard for holiday magic! Metrolink’s Holiday Express is back this season, bringing festive fun to families and friends across Southern California. Step onto one of our specially decorated trains for a one-of-a-kind ride filled with cheerful carolers, holiday characters, interactive activities, and ofcourse, Santa and Mrs. Claus themselves. Before boarding, each station comes to life with a festive welcome event featuring crafts, entertainment, treats, and more. From the moment you arrive until the end of your ride, you’ll enjoy an immersive seasonal experience designed to create lasting memories.”
Here are some events outside of Riverside that I hear many families enjoy attending, even with a bit of a drive:
The SoCal Polar Express Train at the SoCal Railway Museum in Perris. Tickets range from $50-80+ per person. The train runs on a variety of days. This experience is based on the book/movie The Polar Express, and is probably best for fans of the book or movie. “Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, passengers will relive the magic of the classic story as they are whisked away on THE POLAR EXPRESS™ for a magical one-hour trip to meet Santa. Once on board, your car hosts will work their way through the coach and punch your golden ticket before hot chocolate and a delicious cookie are served by dancing chefs. Passengers then read along with the classic children’s book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. Santa and his helpers board the train to greet passengers and each guest is given the first gift of Christmas. During the trip, characters on each car immerse passengers in theatrical onboard entertainment – just like in the film! Each guest will take home a keepsake sleigh bell in addition to the wonderful memories made on this magical trip.” You can read a little more about one family’s experience here.
123 Farms Christmas Nights in Cherry Valley/Beaumont (about 30-45 minutes east of Riverside). My family went a few years ago when they were having a free “soft opening” evening, and we really enjoyed it. This is a lavender farm with lots of white twinkly lights, and we wore our brand-new matching PJs, packed hot cocoa, and had a really magical time wandering among the lights. I’ve never attended when you have to pay admission though - tickets start around $12-15 per person, and are more on weekends. I have also heard that parking can be very tricky/long wait, so consider just parking on the street for free and walking in, and/or get there early. I do think there’s quite a bit to do if you like walking around - there are different areas to walk around and explore, so you can spend 2-3 hours there. Buy tickets ahead of time here.
Tom’s Farms Holiday Harvest - south of Corona in Temescal Valley (near Glen Ivy) has lots of festivities. “Holiday magic is on its way! ✨ Tom’s Farms: The Holiday Harvest is returning just in time to sprinkle a little cheer over Temescal Valley! Join us for the return of our favorite traditions—twinkling lights, the beloved holiday train ride, and playful snowball fights that bring out the kid in everyone. It’s a season you won’t want to miss! More festive details coming soon… see you this December at Tom’s Farms!📍 23900 Temescal Canyon Rd, Temescal Valley, CA 92883”
Downtown Disney feels very festive during the holidays, even if you don’t buy tickets to enter the park. You will need to pay for parking, though they validate if you make purchases. There are usually lots of decorations, and in the past they do a “snowfall” in Downtown Disney, though I don’t see anything currently listed about it yet. You can also watch the fireworks from the Esplanade between Disneyland and California Adventure (though of course they’re not quite as impressive as being in the park). For $12 you can participate in the Chip and Dale Ornament Trail throughout Downtown Disney, and then you get a keepsake at the end. If you want to be extra festive (for a pretty high ticket price) you can do a Christmas character breakfast (again, no park ticket needed.) Personally, we do love going to Disneyland at Christmastime - we went last year for the first time in five years and had so much fun! But, if you’re on a budget and want to visit Disneyland, the best value will probably be waiting for the California Resident 3 Day Deal and going in January - May.
The Christmas Train and Santa’s Village via the Irvine Park Railroad at Irvine Regional Park. The Christmas Train is very popular and as I am putting this together in early November, tickets are already nearly sold out. Here’s info on the Christmas Train: “‘Tis the season for Irvine Park Railroad’s annual Christmas Train. Come with family and friends and take this enchanting ride through historic Irvine Regional Park to meet Santa Claus. The train will depart from the train station and drop passengers off at the North Pole. Children can share their wish list with Santa and have their photo taken with him too. You may take pictures with your personal camera or you may purchase a photo taken by Irvine Park Railroad. After visiting with Santa, hop back aboard the train and enjoy the colorful Christmas lights and decorations, as well as the magical “Tunnel of Lights”, on the ride back to Santa’s Village.” You can still visit the Santa’s Village area without a ticket, but all activities cost money (some are $16+ per person!) Be aware you can’t visit Santa without a train ticket. Finally, after Christmas they are doing a Train of Lights that is like the Christmas Train, but Santa won’t be there, so it’s a little cheaper. Tickets for that will go on sale December 8th, 2025 at 10:00 AM.
Wild Holidays at Safari Park in Escondido is a drive (more than an hour from Riverside) but we have enjoyed attending this event several times - it’s free with an admission ticket or membership, and you get to stay later than usual, so it’s a pretty good value. “Celebrate the holidays and see the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in a whole new light! Go on an expedition of light and travel through places that glow, shine, and twinkle with holiday cheer. Musical entertainment, festive storytelling, and culinary treats create family fun that gets everyone in the spirit of the season. Wild Holidays is scheduled on the following dates: November 28–30; December 19–23; and December 26–January 4, 2026. On Wild Holidays dates, the Safari Park is open until 8 p.m.”
On a similar vein, the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Desert has a Wild Lights event, but your admission ticket only covers the evening event (and members still need to purchase a ticket, just $2 off) so it doesn’t seem to be such a great value in my opinion. But, I wanted to mention as some may still be interested - they describe it as: Feel the holiday spirit come to life as you marvel at awe-inspiring lighted exhibits. Take an enchanting stroll through the African Safari section of the Zoo, where in addition to the lights, you may see some of Africa’s most iconic animals, such as the rhino, giraffe, zebra, and African painted dogs. Visit your favorite festive displays such as the Tunnel of Lights, Dazzling Gift, and holiday-themed G-Scale model train!”
There is also an Electric Light Festival at the Moreno Valley Mall or Outlet Mall in Lake Elsinore for $30 per car. It looks pretty overpriced and short in my opinion, but wanted to mention in case it meets your needs.

Near Riverside:
Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga is a solid 30+ minutes from Riverside, but I’ve heard from families who like going there to meet Santa because it’s free. You have to sign up in advance online, 7 days ahead of time. Reservations open at 12:01am online - if they’re all sold out, log back on at 12:01am and theoretically there should be openings for one day, 7 days in the future. They also have some other festive Christmas happenings (like a Santa read aloud every Tuesday at 4pm.)
Support for Families + Opportunities to Serve Others in Riverside
The holidays can be a special time to think of serving others and volunteering or giving money and donations. At the same time, you may find yourself seeking support this holiday season. Either way, here are some local resources:
Participate in the Riverside Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, which benefits Olive Crest, a local agency that supports foster children in Southern California! It’s from 8am to 10am on Thanksgiving Morning (November 27, 2025) and starts and ends at Condron Coffee near Riverside Plaza. You can walk, run, and bring strollers and leashed dogs!
The City of Riverside, Riverside Fire Department and ABC7 host an annual Sparks of Love toy drive from November 10 to December 12, 2025. “The campaign collects any new, unwrapped toys, sports equipment, blankets and gift cards for underserved children and teens (0-17 yrs. old).” You can donate toys at any Riverside Community Center or Fire Station, or visit a Riverside community center to sign up to receive toys for your family. Find all the info and addresses for locations here.

Putting together shoeboxes full of gifts for Operation Christmas Child is a fun activity to do with your children! You choose whether to give to a boy or girl, and what age range (2-4, 5-9, or 10-14). Go shopping for new items to put into the shoebox, like a toothbrush, toys, school supplies, and more. Your child can draw a picture or write a letter to include in the box. Many churches in the area collect the boxes - click here to find some locations that serve as hubs for collecting. The shoeboxes will be distributed, mostly overseas, through Christian churches around the world. (FYI, this is a very Christian, faith-based organization and boxes are distributed with evangelism materials.)
USPS Operation Santa through the Postal Service allows children to write letters to Santa, and also allows people to help Santa by sending gifts in response to letters. Gift-helpers use a QR code to send the package which protects the letter-writers privacy. It sounds like a cool program! Find all the details here. It looks like many USPS post offices in Riverside are participating, including the one on Chicago, the one downtown, the one in Magnolia Center, on Arlington, and more!
You can donate new toys for foster children through Hope for the Holidays. “HOPE for the Holidays brings joy and comfort to babies, children, and teens in protective care during the holiday season. With the support of our community, we provide toys, gifts, and essentials that help each child feel cared for and remembered. This simple act of kindness creates moments of happiness, connection, and hope for young people who need it most.”
A few organizations that accept physical items (which can be more tangible for children to donate) include: Angels Over Cliffs (support homelessness) and First Congregational Church of Riverside (Project Food).
The Mary S Roberts Pet Adoption Center is offering $40 pet photos with Santa and the Grinch, all to benefit their animal programs. They also offer a number of other programs year-round for kids and teens to get involved!
Have you ever seen the red kettles and bell ringers from the Salvation Army, asking for donations around Christmastime? you can volunteer to ring a bell this holiday season, along with your children. Find out how to sign up here.
Tweens/teens ages 12 and up can volunteer with Feeding America at Christmastime (and all year long!)
The Grove’s Christmas Store provides “a dignified way for parents to give their family new, quality gifts. Christmas can be a stressful time for those who are struggling financially; we want to show the love of Christ by coming alongside them and lifting them through this opportunity to buy gifts for their children. Help us spread joy this holiday season by supporting families in our church and community who are unable to provide gifts for their children.” Volunteer, donate, or sign up to shop here.
Volunteer with Keep Riverside Clean and Beautiful at the opening day for Festival of Lights on November 22. Families of all ages can participate!
Fun Ideas You Can Do Anytime
It’s great to have so many fun, local, festive events and places to go! But here are a few other ideas for simple, inexpensive things you can do anytime, anywhere with your family:
grab some flashlights and go on an evening walk around your neighborhood and look at lights and decorations (even if they’re not particularly “award worthy!”)
turn on festive music to listen to and have a family dance party
pop some popcorn and watch fun holiday movies together - a few of our favorites are A Muppet Christmas Carol, The Star, Home Alone, and The Naughty Nine.
bake your favorite holiday cookies, or make a festive savory holiday snack board
head to a local park (maybe a new-to-you one?) for some play. Holidays can be overwhelming to little ones, and heading to a park to play can be regulating and fun for them! Often the weather is great for visiting a park in November/December - not too hot but not yet too rainy!
check out some holiday picture books from the library and read them together - here are some of our favorite Christmas picture books
pack a thermos of hot cocoa to take on a kid-friendly nature walk or hike - some of our favorite walking trails in Riverside are the Land Use Learning Center, Citrus State Park, Victoria Avenue, UCR Botanic Gardens, or the walking path around Andulka Park.
New Year’s Eve Ideas for Kids
Every year New Year’s Eve rolls around and we wonder how to celebrate with our kids! I’m not aware of any activities in Riverside itself, but here are a few ideas nearby:
The Pennypickle Children’s Museum in Temecula is hosting a noon year’s eve party for $12 per person. It takes place in the middle of the day so you can be cozy at home by evening. This annual event will sell out!
Also in Temecula, the New Year’s Eve Grape Drop is an annual event for families: “Let’s make this a grape New Year at the signature Grape Drop! Celebrate the beginning of 2026 with live music, food vendors, and kid’s activities. This family friendly event features an East Coast countdown at 9:00PM with a grape drop in the form of an exciting drone show!” This could be fun, though keep in mind you’d be driving back to Riverside at 10pm…
Personally, we celebrate at home most of the time:
My kids loved doing a family New Year’s Eve party in the style of Kristina Toddler Approved.
My kids are old enough now that we did a Harry Potter movie marathon last year, which was fun too!
Whew! That’s it for now! Again, if you have ideas for things to add, please contact me.
Wishing you and your family a happy and safe holiday season!
